All hail the open sandwich. When it comes to Copenhagen’s best smørrebrød the beauty is in the detail: good rye bread, seafood (herring, salmon, lobster, crab), perfectly boiled eggs, and a Danish take on dill mayonaise.

Classic: We recommend Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik for traditional smørrebrød in an old-fashioned cosy atmosphere.

Hip: Cafe Dyrehaven offers well-priced open sandwiches located in a former dive-bar turned all day hipster hang-out (both of them above are featured on our video post here). Their approach is a modern take on smørrebrød that gives a gentle nod – or is it a thumbs up? – to tradition.

Fancy: Alternatively head to Aamanns the latest word in posh, new-fangled and fancy Nordic smørrebrød.

DIY: If the sun is shining, stock-up on supplies at scrummy Meyer’s Deli for a take-away picnic version – simply supply your own park.
