The best place to have a drink in Shanghai? With a View: We’re not fans of the chain hotel or the club lounge look but Cloud Nine bar on the 87th floor at the Hyatt offers an amazing overview of the Bund skyline. Mix it up with a (pretty reasonably priced) cocktail and drink in the scenery, but don’t come for the crowd. (Andreas Gursky aficionados may recognise the atrium.)
Cosy Hang-out: For something relaxed Le Cafe des Stagiaires wine bar has wowed Shanghai with its formula of French conviviality and retro-Chinese inspired take on decor. This, their third premises, has a terrace for balmy summer evenings. Expect a reasonably-priced French-style drinks list: verre de rouge, pastis and La Chouffe Belgian beer on tap and some joie de vivre. Keep an eye on their site as they seem to be expanding at a fast pace – they’ve just launched Petanque which combines drinking with French bowling.
