We are not usually huge fans of Bed & Breakfasts (noisy, creepy) but this is a place we’d liked to check out next time we are in Marseille. We love the look of the five lofty bedrooms with their vintage mid-centuries furniture, marble fireplaces and high ceilings. The ironically named Pension Edelweiss (Alt. 50m!) oozes the same old-fashioned charm and effortless cool as Marseille itself. It’s also very central, conveniently located a few minutes away from the Gare St Charles Pension and a 10′ walk from le Vieux Port.
Pension Edelweiss is for design lovers. Here it is all about atmosphere – each room has its own feel and is cleverly decorated with a mix of retro furniture and classic pieces which Madame has been collecting over the years. Everything from the room’s colour schemes, unexpected furniture combinations and some quaint Marseille prints on the wall gives the place a lovely sense of humour, which makes it a very special place to stay.
It is quiet too, which is unusual for B&Bs. And airy. The rooms are spacious, light and two of them have outside balconies or a terrace.
A warm, charming and thoughtful owner completes the picture.
What We Love
The elegance of the rooms – which are both cosy and cool – and the copious continental breakfast (included in the price). On weekdays breakfast is served at the nearby Comptoir Dugommier (a Marseille institution), during the weekend you’ll find it on the upstairs communal table (see photos below).
Two of the rooms have a balcony or a terrace, ideal in balmy Mediterranean weather.
