In summer pretty much any Parisian terrace is great for sipping an apero of cold champagne, cheap and cheerful kir or a slug of Pastis. But for cocktail drinking with intent: the most ‘ hypesque’ option for apero in Paris is Le Mary Celeste.
This recently re-opened tapas bar (with a slightly con-fusion Asiatic style menu) is run by the team behind La Candelaria and Glass. Be warned: weekends can be insane so you will probably need to arrive near the 6pm opening time to score a table. The wine list is great but the cocktails are the true drawcard – we had fun over a couple of ‘Single Ladies’. Unfortunately the €1 oyster happy hour has been disbanded due to supply issues, but hopefully it’ll make a comeback sometime in the future. If you’d like to have dinner, they now take advance reservations on their website and (our tip) request an upstairs table.
Second on the hypo-metre is La Candelaria itself – a neat little cocktail lounge hidden behind a door at the back of their tiny tortilla joint (just push the door that looks like a cupboard, yes, that’s it…) Try the ‘Guepe Verte’ (green wasp) for a cocktail with a little bite.
