One of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the South of France, Les Calanques are a series of white limestone cliffs diving in the turquoise blue waters – a mediterranean fjord if you like – stretching over 20kms between Marseille to Cassis. Accessible by boat, they can also be explored by foot but the conditions are tough and often acrobatic so make sure you are prepared before you embark on a walk.
We tried another, slightly more flamboyant way, which is to go by taxi! If you book a table at the fabulous Le Lunch Restaurant (T: +33 4 91 25 05 37) at Calanque du Sormiou, it’s only a €20 cab ride AND you can get dropped off at the actual beach – otherwise you have to pull over at the carpark which is a long, hot hour walk away. (Note: don’t be surprised if the cab driver complains – those hills certainly strain the engine!) Ask for a table on the deck, and you’ll have lunch literally ‘les pieds dans l’eau’!
