This wonderful, tiny old pub tucked away from the main thoroughfare in olde worlde Clerkenwell must be the best place for a pint in London. The building dates back from 1700 and it feels like a step back in time – Hogwarts-like, with wonky wooden stools and quaint tiles. It serves interesting ales and organic beers, just don’t complain if it’s not very cold or particularly fizzy – apparently it’s supposed to be that way. The crowd is a lively mix of old-school workmen, office workers and creative types from the nearby architecture and design firms. There are hardly any chairs – just squeeze in.
