Istikal Cadessi may be Istanbul’s most buzzing shopping strip – but it’s the atmospheric laneways branching off behind it that make for the most interesting exploration. If you are in the neighbourhood, stop into the House Cafe Tunel or Urban for coffee and a spate of postcard writing. (Arm yourself with missive-worthy antique postcards  at Denizler Kitabeviat, Number 199, Istikal Cadessi.)

If you’re in need of reading materials Robinson Crusoe Books  features a strong design and travel section and a good selection of English-language novels, magazines and non-fiction devoted to Turkish politics and culture. Not only is this an extremely enticing bookstore, they also stock interesting items by local art publishers such as BAS Artist Books.

At night stop in for a drink at 360 bar or wander off the strip a little to find live music at Babylon.
