Given the choice, one usually avoids eating in places where breast plates and amoured helmets form a central motif in the interior design, but it’s worth making the exception at d’Vijff Vlieghen aka Five Flies in Amsterdam.

At Five Flies you’ll find modern Dutch food in an old school premises – complete with insane staircases and a multitude of ye olde worlde ceramic tiles and aforementioned body armour. While not bereft of tourists, this restaurant  is a city institution where many of the chairs have small brass plates inscribed with the names of prominent Dutch identities and are, in essence, reserved for them if and when they wish to dine there. The service is formal but in an old fashioned polite way rather than heavy handed and fussy and the produce is top notch.  Try a local wine.
