Run by the same couple that owns the well-loved breakfast joint Cheeky’s and Birba restaurant, the Alcazar hotel shares the same ethos: simple, thoughtful and convivial.
The 30 odd rooms are spread around a lovely white Spanish Colonial building, circling an outdoor pool. The atmosphere is often more relaxed than more ‘sceney’ PS hotels but the owners are very much part of the local creative scene, so no need to worry about FOMO either.
All the rooms have a paired-down aesthetic: white wood-floors, white linen, white walls and small bathrooms. Most of them overlook the manicured gardens and turquoise blue pool and some of the bigger King rooms upstairs have mountain views. It’s simple, but comfortable.
Right in the center of town on North Canyon Drive, it’s a great location as there are many vintage furniture & design shops, bars and restaurants; including the hotel’s two sister joints Cheeky’s and Birba; within walking distance. If you want to venture further afield you can get a free bike from the hotel.
What We Love
The friendly and laid-back atmosphere and we like the fact that it’s run by a bunch of locals.
Room to Improve
Breakfast – coffee and pastries – is a bit light – even though they get our thumbs up for serving Intelligentsia coffee!
It can get hard to get a table at Birba restaurant and Alcazar hotel guests don’t get priority access so we suggest you book in advance.

Tune into the aptly-named California duo Poolside as you doze off on a sun deck chair next to the Alcazar’s saltwater pool… the group describes their style as ‘Daytime Disco’ – a genre that seems designed for Palm Springs. If you like them, put them on your wish list for Coachella where they’ll be playing on April 13, 2014…
