It’s the Grand thing to do – and the best afternoon tea in London. Simply exhausted by too much Mayfair shopping, you need a well-deserved pause to recompose yourself. No such pause for your credit card though.

Afternoon Tea at the Wolseley is a flamboyant affair. The former Wolseley Car Company showroom turned Barclays Bank turned destination restaurant is nothing short of awe-inspiring (gold! black lacquer! marble! high ceiling! giant chandeliers!). The ballet of (nice) waiters, head-spinning. Alongside a pot of tea, you will be served a multi-storey cake platter with a delicious (and generous) selection of finger sandwiches, fruit scones and a selection of pastries.

It’s not exactly what you’d call cheap (£22.50 per person) but it’s certainly a very memorable, British experience.  (If you’re feeling a little hard-up just order the scones with tea; if you’re in a celebratory mood, try the champagne version.) To snare a table, book well ahead.
