“Imagine gaining access to a travel writer’s notebook. Except that instead of being a realistic mess of on-the-road scrawls and coffee stains, it has been fully souped up, neatly edited, and designed to a high standard” - The Guardian on Hotels We Love
You’ve landed on this page so you must be wondering about the wonderful peeps behind this lovely website (or maybe you are just lost?). HWL was founded by two travel media types. Rachael is a journalist who has worked for the likes of Vogue Living, Wallpaper* Magazine, Lonely Planet, Flipboard and Colors Magazine. Laurence is a TV producer who launched Lonely Planet Television for the global guide book publisher making travel documentaries for Nat Geo, Discovery and Current TV. We like to think we know a thing or two about travel.
Between us we’ve written books, curated websites, produced loads of films and countless webseries and made a bit of art along the way. We have lived all around the world and have become part of a global community of like-minded artists, filmmakers, architects & designers for whom travelling is a perk of pursuing their creative interests across borders.
We were tired of having to trawl through hundreds of websites to prep our trips – none of them seem to be right for us, so we decided to make our own.
The idea behind Hotels We Love is to inspire a creative itinerary that begins in the mind. It’s a sort of ‘anti-TripAdvisor’, where ‘less is more’, designed to give people like us all the basics to kick-start a cool, creative journey. Think is an entirely subjective selection of art, books, films, music and ‘big ideas’ that take you on a labyrinthine adventure without leaving home. Play is a tightly curated trip around what we think are the city’s most inspirational places for creative types. The map at the top of the Play page – for instance Copenhagen – can be printed out and taken with you on your journey. Sleep contains a small, personal list of hotels we love and artful crashpads – by which we mean cosy places with warmth and personality. Our blog Meanwhile & Elsewhere covers other random and interesting destinations.
We hope you like it. We have been blessed with wonderful feedback so far, so we are planning to add more cities as we go, but please do reach out if you would like to contribute in any way!
